For many families, there comes a time when conversations about aging take on a new weight. What begins as small concerns, things like missed medications, difficulty with daily tasks, or lapses in memory, gradually becomes something more. And with that realization comes a difficult question: What is the best way to ensure a loved one is both safe and truly cared for?
The article works through that question honestly. It acknowledges that assisted living has traditionally focused on safety and comfort, and rightly so, but that when too much is done for a person, confidence and identity can quietly go with it. The alternative it describes is the one we practice every day: guiding rather than taking over, breaking tasks into steps someone can actually finish, and creating spaces that invite participation instead of discouraging it. Folding a towel or setting a table sounds like a small thing. For someone living with memory loss, it is a continued sense of purpose.

The rest of the piece traces Sara’s path from a degree in business administration to a psychology degree from the University of Texas at Dallas, and on to her Certified Dementia Care Trainer credential through Teepa Snow. It also covers what a Montessori-inspired model means in practice for families, and the three communities in the GrandView Gardens system: our 14-bedroom home in Prosper, our community in Plano, and the care facility opening soon in Denison.
